Holiday treats and snacks can consume us this time of year. Offering someone a tasty treat is a way of showing someone you care for them and are wishing them a happy holiday season. This year, show them you care by skipping the high calorie treats and offering healthier options.
Here are some healthier alternatives to offer at your next celebration:
- Fruit kabobs and yogurt
- 100 calorie snack packs
- Veggie platters with light ranch dressing or hummus
- Grilled meats
- “Mini versions” of your favorite sweets: try mini-brownies, mini-muffins or mini-bagels
- Baked chips with salsa or black bean dip
- Chicken satay
- Angel food cake and strawberries
- Veggie “shots”: fill the bottom of a small cup with light dip, top with a few sticks of veggies
- Whole wheat crackers and small cubes of cheese
- Bruschetta
- Salads with light dressing (skip the cheese and bacon bits!)
- Graham crackers
- Popcorn (go light on the butter!)
- Sushi
- Turkey wraps (try cutting into bite size pieces for smaller portions!)
- Skip the sodas, eggnog, alcoholic beverages… try water with lemon instead!
- Apples and caramel dip
- Nuts (1 oz serving size is about 14-20 nuts)
- Pretzels
- Sherbet or sorbet
- Low fat cereal bars (look for 5 grams of fat per bar or less!)
