Adoption: Search-and-Reunion Services

If you placed your baby for adoption 18+ years ago, or if you were adopted through CHS 18+ years ago, we may be able to help you search for – and possibly connect you with – your relatives.

Birth parents may also update family and/or medical history at any time. Adoptees may request family medical history at any time.

Available services

Search services

CHS will search and help you make contact with your relative(s), if both parties are willing. Opportunities for contact include:

  • Exchanging letters
  • Conference telephone calls originating at our office
  • Onsite visitation at a CHS office

The fee associated with this service helps cover the cost of the search. Associated costs may include staff time, retrieving archived records, using search engines, counseling, consultations and more. We will do everything we can to complete a successful search, but there are instances in which information simply cannot be found.

In some cases, the person you’re searching for may not want to be contacted, and we must honor that request.

Cost:
Search services for one birth parent: $750
Search services for both birth parents: $1,000

Medical situations:

If a medical situation requires contact with a member of the adoption triad, call us at 904-493-7780. Please have a signed medical statement from a physician explaining the need and urgency. Once we receive your application, medical statement and fee, your application will be moved to the front of the waiting list.

Non-identifying information
Receive genetic and medical history. No identifying information is provided.

Cost: $300

Additional professional services

Some situations require additional time; if we are unable to identify your relative within the contracted time, we will contact you to receive your permission to continue the search.

Cost: $150/hour

Updates and exchanges

Birth families and adoptive families that have previously shared updates may continue coordinating the exchanges through the local CHS office. If that office is no longer facilitating updates, call us at 904-493-7780.

Please keep us updated with any changes to your contact info so we can continue to facilitate updates.

Contact us at any time with questions about the search process:

Florida Statutes Chapter 65C-16.016 and Chapter 63.162 do not allow public access to adoption records. The Adoption Archives Unit at Children’s Home Society of Florida preserves records of clients so adoptees, birth parents and adoptive parents can obtain background information and receive services for search and reunion in accordance with the statute.
