Abuse through the eyes of a child
Mirrors shatter as they’re thrown across the room, smashing into walls. The noise is deafening. Mark and Tammy are in the middle of their daily routine - a fight quickly escalating into a physical brawl.
Their fights always have three small, innocent witnesses – 10-year-old Daniel and his two "baby sisters," as he calls them.
The fighting usually stops, eventually. Mark or Tammy storms out, slamming the door in one last violent act. The remaining parent yells harshly at the children to go to their rooms. And Daniel quietly ushers them off, trying his best to comfort his sisters, hoping to shield them from pain.
Today is different. Today, the fight seems to have no end. Today, overburdened by a mixture of rage and fear no child should have, Daniel picks up the phone and calls 911 to try to make it stop. And, when the police arrive, it does stop. But this time, the ones leaving are Daniel and his sisters.
Officials quickly determine the lengthy history of domestic violence makes the home unsafe for the three children. Unfortunately, no place has room for them to stay together. So, late on this horrible night, the children are escorted in separate cars, where they’ll end up in separate places to live with strangers.
Daniel's story is tragic, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of children, right in our own community, who endure living nightmares similar to Daniel’s. They need our help – they desperately need your help, too.
