Mentors Opening Doors Enriching Lives (MODEL)
MODEL provides quality adult mentors to children and youth, ages 4 to 18 years, who have an incarcerated parent. In this one-to-one mentoring program, each youth is matched with a trained adult mentor with the goal of building trust and communication that will help the child perform better in school, have stronger family relationships, and be more equipped to avoid negative activities or peer relationships.

Currently, MODEL mentoring services are targeted to children in seven regions of Florida including Pensacola, Tallahassee, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Orange, Seminole, Osceola and many of the surrounding communities.

There are just a few requirements in order to be a mentor. You must be:

  • 21 or older
  • Complete an application
  • Meet for a personal interview
  • Attend an orientation session
  • Successfully complete a background check, and
  • Most importantly: Be willing to spend one hour each week for one year with your mentee (that's mentor lingo for the kid you are matched with!) We call this the "1+1+1= 1 BIG Difference" plan.

You may have a few more questions. Can I do this? Am I what they are looking for? Do I have the skills to be a mentor? Not to worry. CHS has qualified staff in each region to provide training and assistance. Our fun and dedicated staff are with you every step of the way, from the time you submit the application to orientation, to meeting your mentee, and throughout the entire match. And we are very good at matching the right adult with the right kid.

It's that easy, so let's get started. Click here to complete a mentor application.
