When a parent struggles to manage his or her own life, makes poor choices, becomes involved with criminal activity or mistreats his or her children, the impact on those youngsters is staggering. If you can't learn from or depend upon your parents, where do you turn?
Last year, more than 40,000 youth received Children's Home Society services designed to nurture personal development and to help them overcome negative family situations. Some of these children have had no interaction with a parent for years, living on the streets or as long-time foster children. The parents of some are incarcerated. Many are young parents themselves but had poor role models and weak or nonexistent family support networks. Still others are living at home but need to learn to better life management skills than their parents have demonstrated.
These children and youth look to CHS' caring volunteers and staff for hope and help.
