Developmentally Challenged Children

Early Steps

No family is ever prepared for the news that their newborn or toddler has a developmental or medical problem. Babies born prematurely or with serious medical complications face a lifetime of challenges. Some of these challenges pose obvious and immediate life-threatening dangers. Others will only become more apparent with time.

How does a parent sort through the maze of diagnoses, treatments, services, eligibility requirements and assistance while managing their everyday lives? Many are overwhelmed; some are devastated. All suddenly must confront difficult questions and issues. Fortunately, CHS professionals are able to step in and work with parents, help them make appropriate decisions and access needed assistance.

CHS provides an array of services to families of children from birth to 36 months who have disabilities or developmental delays. Designed to enhance the development of the child while providing the family with support and hope services include evaluation and planning, physical and speech therapy, home-based teaching, vision and hearing services, nursing and medical services, assistive technology, nutritional planning, family counseling, and transportation.

Caring, capable staff meet with family members in their home, if desired, on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis, depending on family needs. Parents, siblings and extended family learn to care for their challenged child and help that child develop to his or maximum potential.
