Why CHS Needs You
- CHS is a private, not-for-profit organization, not a branch of the Florida Department of Children and Families. Every dollar received from fundraising and special assistance programs goes toward serving children and families in our care.
- By age 18, foster children in the state of Florida are no longer eligible for state-funded assistance.
- We currently serve more than 9,000 children along the Treasure Coast annually.
- Foster children need continuous care and consistent direction. Statistics prove, although youth may stay out of trouble while in foster care, desperate survival requirements create a different environment after they turn 18. Homelessness, early pregnancies, crime and victimization are not uncommon.
- Young adults ages 18-23 are the fastest-growing segment of Florida’s homeless population.
- Studies suggest that after leaving foster care, youth with adult mentors perform better in school, stay out of the criminal justice system and are more likely to gain employment.
- The new Youth Transition Center will assist youth in earning higher education and in finding jobs, stable housing and financial support, as well as other life necessities.
- Through the Youth Transition Center Program, former foster youth will have a far greater chance of becoming self-sufficient adults.
